A continuous glucose monitor (CGM) is wearable technology that tracks your glucose (sugar) levels over time. It measures the glucose level in the interstitial fluid just under your skin 24 hours a day while you’re wearing the device. A CGM gives you real-time information on how your glucose levels are changing. This is especially important because several factors affect blood sugar levels — some of which you can’t predict.

A continuous glucose monitor (CGM) estimates what your glucose level is every few minutes and keeps track of it over time.
A CGM has three parts. First, there is a tiny sensor that can be inserted under your skin, often the skin on your belly or arm, with a sticky patch that helps it stay there. These sensors are called disposable sensors. CGM sensors estimate the glucose level in the fluid between your cells, which is very similar to the glucose level in your blood. Sensors must be replaced at specific times, such as every few weeks, depending on the type of sensor you have.
The second part of the CGM is a transmitter. The transmitter sends the information, without using wires, to the third part, a software program that is stored on a smartphone, on an insulin pump, or on a separate device called a receiver.
The frequency of sensor replacement depends on the specific CGM model. Abbott states that the Freestyle Libre 3 sensor can be worn for up to 14 day and Dexcom states that the Dexcom G7 sensor up to 10 days. While these are the advertised life-spans we always suggest you consult the documentation that comes with your device for more detail.

Not all real-time CGMs offer the ability to eliminate finger sticks, however some allow you to make treatment decisions—how much insulin to dose, for instance—without the need for finger-stick confirmation. Plus, some are factory calibrated, eliminating the hassle and pain of calibrating with finger sticks.
The market leading Freestyle Libre 3 and Dexcom G7 both can eliminate the need for finger-stick tests, but you should always consult your treating provider first.
Both the Freestyle Libre 3 and Dexcom G7 are able to send real-time data to most Apple or Android smartphones via their respective apps. Both the Freestyle Libre and Dexcom apps have the ability to send notifications about your glucose levels to compatible smart watches as well. Please consult the manufacturers website for a full list of compatible devices.
CGMs provide significant, potentially life changing benefits for diabetes management. CGMs are recommended for several reasons because they: (1) Help avoid or delay serious, short- and long-term diabetes complications (2) Potentially save money through improved diabetes management and fewer events, like hypoglycemia (low blood glucose) leading to emergencies (3) Offer people with diabetes and their health care team more details about glucose levels than traditional blood glucose meters—giving the opportunity to analyze the data more precisely than ever before (4) Provide biofeedback in real time, which allows people with diabetes to modify their dietary pattern or insulin dose based on trends, as directed by their health care provider. This may reduce your risk of hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia (high blood glucose).
People with type 1 and type 2 diabetes who use a CGM have fewer instances of hypoglycemia and a lower A1C.
